Most people mean to back up and don't, because backup software is confusing or expensive. This is one small script: point it at a folder and a drive, read the report, add --run. Changed files keep their old versions; deleted files stay safe in the backup.

Good to know

• Python 3.8+ (free).
• Self-test passes on Linux with Python 3; uses only cross-platform standard library calls. Windows/macOS steps are in the guide but were not tested by me.
• A backup tool is not a guarantee: test a restore now and then. Keep one copy offline.
